Everyone Needs a Friend

Everyone needs a friend
When they are down and out.
But what do you do
When the very one you’re calling
Is too far to reach out?
Distances aren’t measured
In miles and kilometres
The distance between the hearts
Is all that really matters.
So near yet so far
Fingers touching
With the hearts miles apart.
What do you do
To fill the yawning gap?
Will an apology work
To create a miracle in a snap?
Wounds do heal with time
Scars remain to remind.
Of years gone by in pain
Of times you bled in vain.

The one who reaches you
The one who bails you out
Is the winner of the trophy
That you never set to give out.
What is friendship then,
A measure of give and take?
Or is it about giving
Putting everything at stake?
There is no turning back
Sometimes you have to move
Keep going and look up,
Dragging yourself if need be
Just not giving up.
The silver lining on the cloud
May be dull and cheerless
The fact that it is there
Provides you hope immense.
