Everyone Needs a Friend

Everyone needs a friend
When they are down and out.
But what do you do
When the very one you’re calling
Is too far to reach out?
Distances aren’t measured
In miles and kilometres
The distance between the hearts
Is all that really matters.
So near yet so far
Fingers touching
With the hearts miles apart.
What do you do
To fill the yawning gap?
Will an apology work
To create a miracle in a snap?
Wounds do heal with time
Scars remain to remind.
Of years gone by in pain
Of times you bled in vain.

The one who reaches you
The one who bails you out
Is the winner of the trophy
That you never set to give out.
What is friendship then,
A measure of give and take?
Or is it about giving
Putting everything at stake?
There is no turning back
Sometimes you have to move
Keep going and look up,
Dragging yourself if need be
Just not giving up.
The silver lining on the cloud
May be dull and cheerless
The fact that it is there
Provides you hope immense.

Nice work, Rukma. I could relate to the helplessness, the agony, the slow adjustment and finally, hope, felt by the narrator at the separation of a beloved friend.

A few of my favourite stanzas -

"But what do you do
When the very one you’re calling
Is too far to reach out?
Distances aren’t measured
In miles and kilometres
The distance between the hearts
Is all that really matters.
So near yet so far
Fingers touching
With the hearts miles apart."
- make the narrator sound so very sad and lonely.

"What do you do
To fill the yawning gap?
Will an apology work
To create a miracle in a snap?
Wounds do heal with time
Scars remain to remind.
Of years gone by in pain
Of times you bled in vain."
- tugs at the heartstrings.

"The silver lining on the cloud
May be dull and cheerless
The fact that it is there
Provides you hope immense."
- so aptly conveys the narrator's unfortunate predicament, enduring spirit, and joyful release.

Once again, a really fine job. Looking forward to reading and enjoying more of your poems... do keep up the good work, Lady!!

Rukma, in my previous comment, I unintentionally and incorrectly referred to the lines in the poem as stanzas. My bad! I do need to read up on the structural elements of a poem :) Frankly speaking, I hadn't read a poem since middle school, a good 22 years ago and as a teenager poetry was such a drag! Reading a few of your poems has certainly changed that attitude and ignited a newfound interest (in poetry) in me. Today, I see things from a different perspective and have learnt to truly appreciate Poets [:)] and the beauty of their work, and have also realized that reading poems offers a pleasure unlike any other form of literature. Thank you, Rukma, for sharing your poems and for introducing me to the Wonderful World of Poetry!!

PS. In the process of attempting to analyze your poems (so as to gain a deeper understanding and an enhanced appreciation of your work), I sincerely hope my comments, if any, will not be perceived as being offensive or insensitive to the Poet's feelings.
